Privacy

No site cookies, no analytics script and no account. This page lists what we record, why, and who handles it.

Who is responsible

Fartherfield, an independent travel publication, publishes this site. It is the data controller: it decides how the site handles personal data. For privacy questions, write to contact@fartherfield.com.

You can read every guide without an account. The site sets no cookies of its own, and we do not sell your data or share it for advertising.

On your device

  • If you switch between the light and dark theme, your browser stores that choice on your device (localStorage, key theme). It never leaves your device.
  • Search runs in your browser, from index files on our server. Our access log keeps the page path only, without the query string, so your search words never reach it. Visit statistics keep only the five campaign tags listed below.
  • Every font, image and script on the site comes from our own domain. No page asks your browser to contact another company.

Access log

Our web server writes one line for each request. The line holds the time, the request method, the page path, the protocol, the response code and the size of the response. It holds no query string. For a missing page, the line shows our error page, not the address you typed. The line holds no IP address and no browser details.

The server keeps at most the latest 30 MB of this log. It starts a new log each time we release a new version of the site.

Visit statistics

We count page views to learn which guides help readers. Our server counts a page view when it delivers a page. No analytics script runs in your browser, and counting a view sets no cookie and stores nothing on your device.

For each page view, our server sends this to our own OpenPanel installation, so no analytics company receives the data:

  • the page address, with only the campaign tags utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign, utm_term and utm_content, each cut to 200 characters. Every other part of the query is dropped.
  • the page title
  • the address of the website that sent you, without the page path, and only when it is another site
  • your browser's user-agent string
  • your IP address

Inside our server, the web server hands your IP address and user-agent string to the program that sends the count. It does not write them to its access log.

OpenPanel uses your IP address and user-agent string in memory only. From them, it works out your approximate location (country, region and city), your browser, your operating system and your device type.

It also makes an anonymous visitor ID, so it can count visitors without a cookie. The ID is a one-way hash of your IP address, your user-agent string, our project ID and a secret. The secret changes every day.

OpenPanel deletes each daily secret after one to two days. After that, the ID cannot be made again or linked to your visits on other days.

OpenPanel does not store your IP address or your full user-agent string. It stores the visitor ID, the approximate location, the browser, operating system and device type, and the page address, title and referring site.

We do not count known bots, link previews, prefetches, redirects, feeds, the sitemap, images or other files.

OpenPanel does not delete old visit statistics on its own. We delete visit statistics older than 12 months.

When you email us

When you write to contact@fartherfield.com, we receive your email address, your name if your mail program sends it, and your message. We use them only to answer you, or to fix the error you report.

Cloudflare Email Routing forwards the message to the owner's inbox. That inbox is a Gmail account, so Google receives and stores the message.

We keep a message for 12 months after our last reply, or for 12 months after it arrives if we do not reply. Then we delete it. You can ask us to delete it sooner.

Who handles data for us

  • Cloudflare runs our DNS, delivers and protects the site, and encrypts the connection. It sees your IP address and the pages you request, as any network provider does. It also forwards mail sent to contact@fartherfield.com.
  • Hetzner Online GmbH runs the server in Finland that hosts the site, its access log and our OpenPanel installation.
  • Google runs Gmail, which holds the inbox that receives our mail.

Your rights

Under the GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation), you can ask us:

  • what personal data we hold about you, and for a copy of it
  • to correct it
  • to delete it
  • to stop using it (your right to object)

To ask, write to contact@fartherfield.com. We reply within 30 days.

You can also complain to the Dutch data protection authority, the Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens (opens in a new tab).
